Oregon Commercial Fishing Industry Economic Impacts Were a Record High in Year 2025

Oregon’s commercial fishing industry reached an all-time high in economic impact in 2025. What does it mean for the state’s blue economy and coastal tourism?

According to a new analysis by The Research Group, harvesting and processing businesses generated $517 million in household income (including multiplier effects), supporting 10,321 jobs statewide. Total economic activity reached $1.1 billion, with onshore commercial fishing deliveries valued at $223.3 million.

“This is welcome news among the doom and gloom heard about our natural resources,” said Marcus Hinz, Executive Director of the Oregon Coast Visitors Association. “It shows the fishing industry’s significance in Oregon’s blue economy and the importance for supporting associated businesses and workforce. But this is not an ‘all clear’ when it comes to threats to the industry. Natural resource industries are highly volatile, reflecting environmental, economic and social realities. Some of that volatility hits year-to-year and other forms of it are on a longer-term trend. It’s important to continue supporting the seafood industries on the Oregon Coast, as they are a core part of our communities, values and who we are. These industries represent much more to our communities than just dollars.”

The report highlights strong performances across several key fisheries in 2025, while also acknowledging continued volatility tied to market disruptions, export pressures, rising operating costs and climate-related variability. Salmon fisheries remain constrained by low stock abundance, and international trade barriers continue to impact export-dependent species.

For Oregon’s visitor economy, the connection is direct and tangible.

“Commercial and recreational fishing opportunities are draws for increased tourism on the Oregon Coast,” Hinz said. “Eco- and culinary-oriented travelers are attracted to destinations that demonstrate strong natural resource assets and stewardship.”

From dockside seafood to charter fishing experiences, the health of the commercial fleet influences the authenticity and appeal of Oregon’s coastal communities. As consumer demand for sustainable, locally sourced food grows, the industry’s performance plays an increasing role in destination positioning.

Ultimately, a strong fishing industry strengthens our communities, our visitor economy and our identity as a place rooted in stewardship and working landscapes.
